LOCAL LIONS THANK ELLENBROOK & SURROUNDING SUBURBS

DATE: 1 March 2010.

Ellenbrook’s Lions members today applauded the generosity of the local community, with a massive 1068 Christmas Cakes and Puddings purchased this year.

And, given the cakes’ growing popularity, Lions Australia are looking for local suggestions as to how best serve the iconic cake.

“The community’s residents deserve a huge congratulation for their generosity in what has been a very tough year,” Lions President, Tony Turner said.

“Despite the financial pressures of 2009, we’ve sold a record number of cakes this year, thanks to the ongoing contribution of our many long-term supporters and to quite a few first-time cake purchasers.  It’s just an idea at this stage but, given the resident’s obvious enjoyment of, and appreciation for our Christmas Cakes, I’d love to hear your suggestions as to how best to serve the cake.”

The sale of the traditional Christmas Cakes marks the end of a very successful year for the Ellenbrook Lions Club, Tony said.

“In addition to the money raised through the sale of the cakes, we’ve recently been able to donate to the Haiti Earthquake and Toodyay Bush Fire appeals as a result of Swap Meets, Sales of Lions Mints, Newspaper Collection, Sausage Sizzles, Lions Childrens Train events and Raffles). Our new website www.ellenbrook.wa.lions.org.au has more details”

“In fact, since Lions around Australia started selling Christmas Cakes way back in 1965, we have raised an estimated $45 Million-plus, with a direct annual boost to our Sight, Health, Welfare and Humanitarian projects of more than $2 million each year.”

Please email or post your serving suggestions to pocboam1@bigpond.com or PO Box 2132 Ellenbrook WA 6069.

Ellenbrook Lions Club donate Bus to community

Lions fill gap in Ellenbrook’s transport needs

The Lions Club of Ellenbrook has donated a bus to the City of Swan to help plug the holes in Ellenbrook and surrounds woeful public transport.

President Tony Turner said buying a bus came about because there is no public transport available most of the time for local residents.

“A person only needs an ordinary car licence to drive the bus. It’s a 12 seater and it’s perfect for community groups and members to get to events in other suburbs.

“We were promised a train for Ellenbrook, which now looks like it’s along way off and the bus service is inadequate. It’s basically non-existence at night.

“This gives people an alternative to taking private cars. A group can go together and it’s convenient for people.’’

Ellenbrook Lions club member Rad Dickerson said the bus could be used by any community group who was running a community initiative, and might even be a way for young people to get to special sporting events.

He said it was a community initiative to fill a need in the district.

Mr Turner said the bus would be administered by the City of Swan and the official handover help on February 20 at Woodlake.
