New fire station contributes to Ellenbrook’s growth

September 1, 2010 Comments »

Response times to fires, road crashes and other emergencies in the Ellenbrook region are expected to improve with the opening of a new $3.2million fire station.

Emergency Services Minister Rob Johnson today officially opened the facility, which will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by one station officer and three firefighters.

Mr Johnson said the rapid growth of Ellenbrook and surrounding suburbs had created the need for a dedicated fire station in the area.

“The developing estates at Ellenbrook and The Vines have led to an increase in the number of alarm activations, road crashes and properties requiring protection from bushfires,” he said.

“This new station has been strategically located at a site with easy access to the Wangara commercial district, industrial areas and major roads, allowing for fast emergency responses.”

The Minister commended the efforts of the local volunteer bushfire brigade, which had previously dealt with the area’s fires.

He said while their main role had been to respond to bushfires, the West Swan Bush Fire Brigade had adapted to a changing landscape.

“As development in the area began and continued to grow, these dedicated volunteers took on the extra responsibility of dealing with structural fires and provided a service that the residents in the area could rely on,” he said.

Mr Johnson said the Ellenbrook Fire Station was part of more than $128million in funding that the State Government had invested across the next four years to boost frontline emergency services in Western Australia.

The funding included new emergency services facilities, 102 additional firefighters and a permanent increase in the air services fleet.

“This funding reflects the importance this Government places on community safety and the lead role of FESA in managing emergency services in WA,” he said.

“We are continuing to support and develop the State’s ability to effectively manage and respond to emergencies to ensure all West Australians are well protected.”

THANKS DAD PHOTOVOICE COMPETITION

It is time again for the “Thanks Dad PhotoVoice Competition”. The competition aims to increase the profile of fathers and father figures in the community.

In previous years the competition has been enormously successful with many photos being entered that capture the special moments between a child and male role model.

The competition is coordinated by the  Ellenbbrook Early Years Working Group to highlight the positive impact fathers and father figures including stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles and sports coaches have on children.

Registration and entries for the competition will be open from Friday the 1st July 2010. All entries should be in by Friday the 19th August 2010. Entry in the competition is free and there are fabulous prizes up for grabs.

Photos along with a description of 25 words or less can be submitted at The Ellenbrook Community Library. Entry forms are also available from the library.

Ellenbrook Radio needs our support

June 3, 2010 Comments »

To: Supporters of Just Local.com

“As you may or not be aware, Radio Ellenbrook 88fm is “Fighting for It’s Survival”

The letter below from their Secretary briefly explains their predicament

So please complete the appropriate letter attached (individual or business) and email it to

radioellenbrook88@bigpond,com

as soon as posible so they can add your support to their application.

Regards

Rebecca Cornthwaite

“Dear Friends and Supporters of Radio Ellenbrook 88fm.

We are now immediately embarking on the next phase of our campaign whereby Ellenbrook Community Radio Inc is submitting an application for a Temporary Community Broadcasting Licence (TCBL).

Up until now Radio Ellenbrook 88fm, in conjunction with Western Tourist Radio, has been providing a narrowcast service for over 3 years in a 10km radius from its station at 4/60 Coolamon Blvd, Ellenbrook.

If our application for a TCBL is successful, it would mean that our new signal would enable us to add the entire Swan Valley, Chittering Valley, Bullsbrook, Gingin, Midland and others to our existing listening audience. In time, we would obtain a permanent Community Broadcasting Licence.

We are appealing to existing and future sponsors, supporters and friends in all the above areas to assist us by writing letters to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in support of our application so that there will be a community radio station serving the large area of north-east Metro Perth that does not have community radio.

When you have completed your letter, please email it to the station on radioellenbrook88@bigpond.com as soon as possible for inclusion in our detailed application.

Yours sincerely

Anne Green

Secretary

Ellenbrook Community Radio Inc
